The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department currently provides for the Constitutional health care rights of its incarcerated inmates with the establishment of the Corrections Health Clinic, located within the Pierce County Detention and Corrections Center. The Sheriff’s Department is committed to providing community standard health care to the incarcerated population of the Pierce County Detention and Correction Center.
The Pierce County Jail Corrections Health Clinic has a staff of approximately 50 people providing a variety of services (medical, mental health, dental) to the inmate population.
Upon arrival, all Pierce County Jail inmates are screened to determine medical appropriateness for housing in the facility. Health services also provide for both emergent and non-emergent medical needs of the inmate via local emergency rooms and daily sick-call Monday through Friday respectively. There are medical staff on-site 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
The Pierce County Jail Corrections Health Clinic manages a variety of challenges in trying to meet the needs of this under-served population. Corrections Health’s contribution to the general welfare of the public goes virtually unnoticed, as many of the clients who frequent the jail, especially the mentally ill, have no resources for health care on the outside
